What to know before you buy

Why UV instead of chlorine?: Chlorine works, but it changes the taste and smell of your water and leaves disinfection by-products behind. UV does the same job with light — no chemicals, no taste change, no by-products.
Who needs it: Anyone on a private well, anyone whose water tests positive for coliform, and anyone who wants peace of mind that what comes out of the bathroom tap is safe to swallow.
What it costs to run: About the same as a 40-watt light bulb left on continuously. The lamp gets replaced once a year — that's it.

What Magic Valley homeowners ask us most before they buy.

Do I need UV disinfection on a private well?

If your well has ever tested positive for coliform or E. coli, or if it's shallow, older, or near livestock or septic, UV is the standard fix. It inactivates bacteria, viruses, and cysts without adding any chemical or changing taste. Many Magic Valley well owners install it as low-cost insurance after a bad test.

How often does the UV lamp need replacing?

Annually. The lamp keeps glowing well past the point where its germicidal output drops below effective levels, so it's a calendar item, not a wait-until-it-dies item. The quartz sleeve should be cleaned at the same time, and we set customers up on an annual reminder.

Does UV remove iron, hardness, or sediment?

No. UV only inactivates living organisms. It also requires reasonably clear water to work, so sediment filtration ahead of the lamp is required and iron or hardness treatment is often installed alongside it. We design the whole train, not just the lamp.
