Iron and Sulfur in Magic Valley Well Water: What Actually Works

If you're on a well in Jerome, Gooding, or out past Hansen, there's a good chance you've fought iron staining or that classic 'rotten egg' sulfur smell. The Magic Valley's geology delivers both in abundance.

Why softeners alone don't cut it

A standard water softener can handle a small amount of dissolved iron (under 3 ppm), but Magic Valley wells often run higher than that. Once iron oxidizes inside a softener, it fouls the resin bed and the softener stops doing its main job.

The right fix: pre-treatment + softener

For iron above 3 ppm, hydrogen sulfide, or manganese, you may need a dedicated oxidizing filter ahead of the softener. Air-injection systems oxidize iron and sulfur, then filter the precipitate out before the water hits anything else.

What we test for first

• Hardness (grains per gallon)
• Dissolved iron — both ferrous and ferric
• Hydrogen sulfide (the smell)
• Manganese (causes black staining)
• pH (low pH makes iron harder to remove)
