Iron and Sulfur in Magic Valley Well Water: What Actually Works

If you're on a well in Jerome, Gooding, or out past Hansen, there's a good chance you've fought iron staining or that classic 'rotten egg' sulfur smell. The Magic Valley's geology delivers both in abundance.

Why softeners alone don't cut it

A standard water softener can handle a small amount of dissolved iron (under 3 ppm), but Magic Valley wells often run higher than that. Once iron oxidizes inside a softener, it fouls the resin bed and the softener stops doing its main job.

The right fix: pre-treatment + softener

For iron above 3 ppm, hydrogen sulfide, or manganese, you need a dedicated oxidizing filter ahead of the softener. Systems like the Hellenbrand Iron Curtain inject air to oxidize iron and sulfur, then filter the precipitate out before the water hits anything else.
