5 Signs Your Water Softener Is Failing

If your softener has been on the job for a decade or more, you may start noticing the gentle return of hard-water symptoms. Some are easy fixes; others mean it's time to talk replacement. Here are the five biggest red flags we see in Magic Valley homes.

1. Spots on glassware and shower doors

The earliest tell. Soft water rinses cleanly; hard water leaves dissolved calcium behind as it evaporates. If spots are creeping back, check your salt level first.

2. Soap that won't lather

Soap reacts with hardness minerals before it can lather. Shampoo, dish soap, and laundry detergent all suddenly feeling 'flat' is classic hard-water behavior.

3. Crusty buildup on fixtures

White or greenish scale on faucet aerators and showerheads means hardness is making it all the way to the tap. Time to check the system.

4. Skin and hair feel different

Drier skin, dull hair, and itchy scalps are real symptoms — not in your head. Your skin will thank you for catching this early.

5. The brine tank looks wrong

Salt bridges (a hard crust over empty space), salt mush at the bottom, or a tank full of water all indicate the regeneration cycle has stopped working properly.

What to do next

Start by adding salt and running a manual regeneration. If symptoms don't clear within a day or two, the resin bed, valve, or brine draw may need service. Most softeners last 10–15 years; past that, replacement is usually more cost-effective than rebuilding.
